Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping 340 metres in a single unbroken fall from the edge of the Khasi Hills plateau into a pool of remarkable turquoise-green water below. It is about five kilometres from Cherrapunji, accessible by road with a short walk to the viewpoint.

The falls are most dramatic during and immediately after the monsoon (July–September), when the volume of water is enormous. During the dry season (December–March) the flow reduces but the falls continue; the turquoise pool at the base is visible from the viewpoint year-round. A path descends to the base of the falls, though this requires some fitness.

A story
The name Nohkalikai means "Jump of Ka Likai" in Khasi, referring to a local legend about a woman named Likai who, driven mad by grief after discovering her husband had killed and cooked her daughter, threw herself off the cliff. The pool at the base of the falls is an unusual turquoise-green colour caused by the dissolved minerals in the water.
