Mawsmai Cave is the most accessible cave system in the Cherrapunji area, a short walk from the road through a well-lit limestone tunnel about 150 metres long. The cave passes through stalactite and stalagmite formations deposited over millennia by the extraordinary rainfall filtering through the limestone. It is a tourist site with lighting and a clear path, not an expedition.
The cave gives a good sense of what lies beneath the Khasi Hills plateau: a network of limestone cave systems carved by one of the highest volumes of water on earth. Mawsmai is the easiest to visit; longer and more adventurous cave tours can be arranged from Cherrapunji for those who want something more serious. The village of Mawsmai outside is typical of the area.
