The university quarter, a kilometre east of Police Bazar. Laitumkhrah ("free of the Umkhrah river" in Khasi) is where most of Shillong's young creative life happens — bookshops, cafes, live-music venues, and the kind of small restaurants that survive on student trade.
If you have come to Shillong for the music scene, you will spend most evenings here. It is also the gateway to most of the schools and colleges that ring the city, including St. Edmund's and St. Mary's, both of which date to the late nineteenth century.
