Aska Sugar Mill

The Aska Sugar Mill, established in 1824, is one of the oldest sugar mills in Asia and the industrial landmark that has shaped the town's identity. The mill continues to operate and the sight of the factory and its chimney stack is the most distinctive feature of the town's skyline.

The mill is not open for general visitor tours, but the sugar-processing season (roughly November through March) brings visible activity to the facility and a sweetness to the air around the town. For visitors with an interest in industrial history or in understanding the colonial economic infrastructure of Odisha, the mill represents a tangible piece of that story.

A story
The mill was established in 1824 during the British colonial period, making it one of the oldest industrial sugar operations in Asia. The local climate and the availability of sugarcane in the Ganjam plains made the location commercially attractive. The mill gave Aska its longstanding nickname: the 'Sugar City of Odisha.'
