Rajarani Temple

An elegant 11th-century Bhubaneswar temple famous for sculptural detail and warm red-yellow sandstone.

Rajarani Temple is one of Bhubaneswar's most graceful monuments, built from the warm red and yellow stone that gives the temple its name. It has no active deity inside, which changes the mood: less ritual bustle, more space to look closely at the sculptural programme and the fine vertical rhythm of Odishan temple architecture.

It is especially rewarding if you have already seen Lingaraja from outside or visited Mukteshvara. Rajarani is quieter and more contemplative, with carvings of guardians, musicians, couples, and divine figures that reward slow circling rather than a quick photograph.
