Cuttack Chandi Temple

The Cuttack Chandi Temple, dedicated to the goddess Chandi, is the most important religious site in the city. The current temple is a relatively recent rebuilding on an old foundation, plain on the outside but always busy with worshippers — Cuttack's residents will tell you the goddess is the real owner of the city, and her blessing is sought for everything from new businesses to weddings.

Non-Hindus are usually allowed in to the outer courtyard. The temple is at its most atmospheric at dawn and at the evening aarti.

A story
Chandi is the presiding deity of Cuttack and the temple sits a few minutes' walk from the river — the goddess is held to protect the city from floods. During Durga Puja the temple and the streets around it draw enormous crowds, with the Chandi Medha pandal one of the most lavishly decorated in Odisha.
