Cuttack's location at the apex of the Mahanadi delta makes it a convenient base for excursions. Dhavaleswar, a small island in the Mahanadi with a temple on a hillock, is a pleasant half-day trip. Though the temple structure is relatively modern, sculptures from the 10th and 11th centuries are found in its premises.
