Satkosia Gorge

Mahanadi river canyon through forested hills

The Satkosia gorge, on the south-western edge of Dhenkanal district, is where the Mahanadi — Odisha's largest river — squeezes through a forested canyon for some 22 km. The reserve protects sal forest, mugger crocodiles, gharial, otters, and a small population of tigers and elephants. The Tikarpada and Baliput access points have forest department guesthouses; eco-camps along the river offer tented accommodation and short cruises through the gorge.

The best time is November to March, when the river is calmer and the weather cool enough to walk. Wildlife sightings other than birds are unpredictable; the gorge itself is the reliable spectacle. Arrange forest department permits in advance.

A story
The name Satkosia ("seven kos" or roughly 22 km) refers to the length of the gorge where the wide Mahanadi narrows from a 1 km-wide river plain to a steep-sided canyon barely 200 metres across. The Satkosia Tiger Reserve created in 2007 covers nearly 1,000 sq km of the surrounding forest.
