The Rath Yatra at Kukurjanga village, about 7 kilometres from Jharsuguda, is one of the most elaborate chariot festivals in western Orissa. Unlike the famous Puri Rath Yatra where the chariots are replaced each year, the Kukurjanga chariot is a permanent structure with sixteen wheels — unusually large for a rural setting — and serves the same 17th-century temple year after year.
The main festival happens on the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha (typically June or July), coinciding with the Puri celebrations. Thousands of devotees pull the chariot through the village streets. The return procession (Bahuda Yatra) does not happen until the full moon of Ashada, making this one of the longer chariot festival cycles in the region. If you are in Jharsuguda during the festival period, this is well worth attending.
