Konark Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum at Konark, operated by the Archaeological Survey of India, holds the sculptures removed from the Sun Temple during conservation and restoration work. Many of the finest carvings — including panels of erotic sculpture, images of Surya and his attendants, and fragments of the original tower — are displayed here in proper museum conditions, protected from the weathering that has damaged pieces left on the temple exterior.

The collection is small but of exceptional quality. It is easy to spend an hour here examining individual carvings in detail that simply isn't possible on the temple itself. The museum is located just outside the temple compound and is included in the combined entry ticket.

A story
Among the museum's prize pieces is a fragment of the famous "Wheel of Time" — one of the 24 colossal carved wheels that ring the temple platform. Each wheel is over three metres in diameter, with 8 major and 8 minor spokes that function as a 24-hour clock. In direct sunlight, the shadow cast by the wheel's hub and spokes allows a skilled observer to read the time to within approximately 30 minutes.
