The town's principal temple sits on a low rise on the southern side of Rayagada. It was built by King Vishwanath Dev Gajapati of the Suryavansh dynasty as the patron shrine of his new capital and is dedicated to Majhighariani, a fierce form of Durga worshipped across southern Odisha. The current structure has been rebuilt several times but the deity inside is the same one the king installed.
The temple is busy during morning and evening worship and quiet in between. Festivals — particularly during Dussehra — fill the surrounding lanes with crowds. Modest dress and bare feet inside, as at any active Indian temple.
