Day Trips

Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, about 60 kilometres from Sambalpur on the southern shore of the Hirakud reservoir, is the most rewarding day trip from the city. The 350-square-kilometre sanctuary protects leopard, sambar, wild boar, and a population of sloth bear, along with over 200 recorded bird species. The forest is dense mixed deciduous woodland that changes dramatically by season — November through February is the best time for wildlife sightings. Entry requires a permit from the forest office at Debrigarh village; jeep safaris can be arranged there.

The Huma Temple, about 25 kilometres south of Sambalpur on the Mahanadi, is notable for its tilted shikara (tower) — the structure leans visibly, earning it comparisons to the Tower of Pisa. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sits directly above the river bank; the adjacent Mahanadi stretch is known for the large mahseer fish that gather at the temple steps and can be fed by hand. The drive along the river road is pleasant.

Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary, roughly 55 kilometres away, is a less-visited alternative to Debrigarh, with teak forest and opportunities to see wild elephants and gaur.
