Nathu La

Nathu La is the high border pass east of Tsomgo Lake, reached only when permits, weather, and army conditions allow. The drive climbs into a stark landscape of snowfields, military posts, and thin air.

Do not assume it will be included automatically. Permits are limited, foreigners face additional restrictions, and closures are common. If you do get there, take it slowly; the altitude can hit hard.

A story
Nathu La was once part of the old Silk Route linking Sikkim with Tibet. It reopened for limited border trade in the 2000s, but for travellers it remains more symbolic than commercial: a cold, heavily controlled pass where geography and politics meet.
