Tsomgo Lake

High-altitude Sikkim lake on the road to Nathu La, ringed by steep snow-holding slopes.

Tsomgo Lake, also written Changu or Tsongmo, is the classic high-altitude excursion from Gangtok. The lake sits beside the road to Nathu La at about 3,750 metres, ringed by steep slopes that hold snow well into spring. In winter it can freeze hard; in summer the surrounding hills brighten with alpine flowers.

The lake is beautiful, but it is not wilderness. Expect permit checks, jeeps, snack stalls, and decorated yaks for photographs. The trick is to accept the busyness and still look properly: the water changes colour with light and season, and the surrounding military road gives the whole place a frontier edge.

Most visitors combine the lake with Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary, and Nathu La if permits are available. Weather matters. Snow, landslides, or military restrictions can close the road quickly.

Getting There

Tsomgo Lake is reached by shared or reserved jeep from Gangtok, usually as part of a permit-controlled day trip. The road is steep, scenic, and vulnerable to snow, fog, and landslides.

Foreign visitors and Indian citizens have different permit rules in Sikkim, and Nathu La has additional restrictions. Arrange paperwork in Gangtok before setting out rather than assuming it can be solved at the checkpoint.

When to Go

January to March gives the strongest chance of snow and a frozen lake, but also the greatest risk of road closures. April to June is gentler, with clearer access and alpine flowers around the slopes. The monsoon can bring cloud, rain, and landslides; autumn is often crisp and photogenic.
