The Vivekananda Rock Memorial stands on one of two rocky islets just offshore from Kanyakumari, accessible by a short ferry ride from the mainland. It was built to commemorate the philosopher Swami Vivekananda, who meditated on this rock in 1892 before setting off to represent Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. The memorial building is a tasteful piece of modern religious architecture, blending elements from different Indian temple traditions.
Inside is a meditation hall where you can sit quietly — if the crowds allow — and look back at the mainland tip. The ferry from the shore carries pilgrims and tourists in roughly equal measure, and the atmosphere on the rock itself is both devotional and tourist-busy. The views of the convergence of three seas, with the Thiruvalluvar Statue visible on the adjacent rock, are genuinely impressive.
