Karaikudi is the gateway to Chettinad, and the main reason to visit is the Chettinad mansion architecture that fills the town and surrounding villages. Many of the great houses are empty or semi-abandoned, some have become heritage hotels, and a few are open to visitors. Beyond the architecture, the food is the other great draw — the Chettinad kitchen is one of India's most complex and spice-forward regional cuisines, and you will eat well here.
