Thiruparkadal is a shallow freshwater lake on the southeastern edge of Mannargudi, fed by channels from the Cauvery Delta irrigation network. The lake is important for local fishing — you will see small boats and cast nets in use most mornings — but its main draw for visitors is the birdlife.
Between November and February, migratory waterbirds arrive in significant numbers: painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, egrets, and various herons. The birding is not as famous as Vedanthangal or Point Calimere, but the lake sees far fewer visitors, which means less disturbance and easier sightings. Bring binoculars and get there at dawn. There is no formal entry or fee — just walk along the bund road on the northern shore.
