Gandamadana Parvatham

Gandamadana Parvatham is a small hillock about three kilometres north of the main temple, considered the highest point on Pamban Island. A shrine here is said to contain the footprints of Rama, and the hillock is included in most pilgrimage circuits. The elevation is modest by any measure — the island is essentially flat — but enough to give unobstructed views across the rooftops of Rameshwaram, the temple gopurams, and on clear days, across the water toward the Sri Lankan coast.

The site is approached by a covered stairway and is popular with pilgrims at dawn and dusk. The views at those hours, with the light catching the sea on both sides of the island, are the main draw for non-pilgrims. A mandapam (pillared hall) at the summit shelters the footprint shrine and provides shade. The walk up takes only a few minutes and can easily be combined with the main temple visit.
