Things to do in Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram's activities are almost entirely bound up with pilgrimage and the island's natural setting. Most visitors spend two to three days.

The standard pilgrimage circuit involves bathing at Agnitheertham beach before dawn, entering Ramanathaswamy Temple for the morning puja, then visiting the 22 sacred wells inside for ritual bathing. This takes the better part of a morning.

The drive to Dhanushkodi is one of the more unusual journeys in India — a 20 km track through sand dunes and fishing hamlets to a deserted ghost town at the island's eastern tip. Jeeps from the town can be hired for around 800-1000 rupees for the return trip. The beach at Dhanushkodi is clean and almost always empty.

The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park covers the waters around Rameshwaram and contains coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine life including dugongs. Glass-bottom boat trips operate from the main beach, though visibility can be limited depending on the season. The best months are January to March.
