Adisvaraswamy Jain Temple

The Adisvaraswamy Jain Temple is a small but finely worked Jain shrine in the northern part of Thanjavur, dedicated to Adisvaraswamy, the first tirthankara. It stands as a reminder that the Cauvery delta was once home to a significant Jain community alongside its dominant Shaivite and Vaishnavite populations — the Jains were influential traders and merchants in the Chola courts, and several of Thanjavur's older commercial families trace Jain heritage.

The temple architecture blends Tamil gopuram conventions with the spare aesthetic that characterises Digambara Jain shrines across Tamil Nadu. The carvings are less exuberant than those at the Brihadisvara but are carefully executed. It receives few foreign visitors and the atmosphere is quiet; the priests are generally willing to explain the iconography. A short visit adds useful texture to the city's religious plurality.
