Sangeetha Mahal

The Sangeetha Mahal — the Hall of Music — is a chamber within the Thanjavur Royal Palace complex dedicated to the classical Carnatic music tradition that the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur actively patronised. The hall was the venue for court performances from the 17th century onward, and Thanjavur under Maratha rule became one of the most important centres of Carnatic music in South India: the composer Tyagaraja, one of the three great Carnatic trinity composers, was born and worked in the region.

The room itself is elegant — a long hall with carved wooden screens, a painted ceiling, and excellent natural acoustics. It is part of the Royal Palace complex ticket and usually shown as part of the palace tour. Music performances are occasionally staged here during festivals; check with the palace ticket office about upcoming events during your visit.

A story
The hall's acoustics were deliberately designed to carry music from a central performance position to every corner without amplification — a feat achieved through the combination of vaulted ceilings and strategic placement of resonating chambers behind the plasterwork. Serfoji II, who renovated the hall in the early 19th century, was an accomplished veena player himself and held regular concerts here.
