The Porunai Museum opened in 2023 in a purpose-built complex on the southern edge of Tirunelveli. It is the showcase for the Tamil Nadu Department of Archaeology's long-running excavations at Adichanallur, Sivakalai, Keezhadi, and other sites along the Thamirabarani (Porunai) river — work that has produced carbon-dated finds going back to around 1155 BCE.
The galleries are arranged chronologically and include burial urns, iron weapons, painted pottery, gold ornaments, and a striking reconstruction of an Iron Age cremation site. The displays are bilingual (Tamil and English) and engaging. For anyone interested in early south Indian history, it is one of the more important museum openings in the state in a generation.
