Unakoti

Unakoti is Tripura's most mysterious archaeological site, a forested hillside carved with enormous Shaivite rock reliefs and scattered stone images. The central face, often identified with Shiva, is massive, stylised, and unforgettable.

It lies far enough from Agartala that it deserves planning, usually as an overnight or long day with an early start. The site is most atmospheric outside the harshest midday heat, when the carvings and trees have some shadow.

A story
The name Unakoti is commonly explained as "one less than a crore," tied to legends of countless gods and goddesses turned to stone. Whatever the myth, the huge rock-cut faces emerging from forested slopes feel unlike almost anything else in India.
