Tripura is a small northeastern state with a surprisingly rich travel mix: royal palaces, Bengali-influenced towns, tribal hill country, lakes, wildlife sanctuaries, and some of India's most intriguing rock carvings. It sits almost wrapped by Bangladesh, which gives it a different feel from the larger Himalayan states to the north.
The capital, Agartala, is the practical base and the place to start, especially for Ujjayanta Palace. From there, the classic circuit runs to Neermahal, the lake palace at Rudrasagar; Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur; and Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. With more time, push north to Unakoti or east into the Jampui Hills.
Tripura is not difficult in the way some remote northeastern routes can be, but it does require planning. Public transport exists, yet many of the best sights are scattered; a car and driver can turn a frustrating route into a good one. The reward is a state that still feels overlooked, even by travellers who think they know India well.
