Kasar Devi

Ridge-top temple and counterculture hamlet with pines, cafes, and Himalayan views

Kasar Devi sits above Almora on a pine-covered ridge, with a small temple, wide views, and a history that reaches well beyond ordinary hill-station sightseeing. Swami Vivekananda meditated here in the 1890s, and in the 1960s and 1970s the ridge became part of the wandering Himalayan counterculture circuit.

The temple itself is modest, but the setting is the point. Come for the walk, the changing light across the Kumaon hills, and the sense that Almora's spiritual life has always had room for outsiders as well as local devotion.
