Chandi Devi Temple

Chandi Devi Temple stands on Neel Parvat hill on the eastern bank of the Ganges, accessible by cable car from Chandi Ghat or by a 3-kilometre trek through the forest. It is one of the five tirthas of Haridwar and dedicated to Chandi, a fierce form of the goddess Durga. The temple's hilltop position offers sweeping views across the Shivalik range.

The forest trail to the temple passes through a sal forest and takes about an hour at a comfortable pace. A variety of monkeys inhabit the route and can be bold — keep food secured. The cable car is faster and runs from about 7am until 6pm daily. The temple is included in the Panch Tirtha circuit, a set of five sacred sites that devout pilgrims visit in sequence within Haridwar.

A story
The idol of Chandi Devi is said to have been installed by the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. According to legend, the demon commanders Shumbha and Nishumbha were slain by the goddess on this very hill, which is known as Neel Parvat — the blue mountain.
