Pindari Glacier Trek

Karanprayag is one of the main gateways for the Pindari Glacier trek, one of the classic Kumaon Himalaya routes. The glacier sits at around 3,660 metres in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, and the standard trek takes five to six days from the roadhead at Song or Loharkhet (both accessible from Bageshwar, south of Karanprayag). The route passes through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine before reaching the high alpine meadows below the glacier.

From Karanprayag, most trekkers take a local bus or shared jeep south to Bageshwar (about 3–4 hours), then proceed to the trailhead. The trek itself is non-technical and manageable for fit walkers, though it involves significant altitude gain. May–June and September–October are the best months. Guides and basic guesthouses are available at the staging villages along the route. Independent trekking is possible but local guiding knowledge is genuinely useful on this route.
