The pilgrimage season runs from May to October, when the road to Badrinath is open and the weather is warm enough for trekking. Monsoon (July–August) brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on the mountain roads; travelling in this window requires flexibility.
Winter (November–March) is quiet and cold, with snow closing the higher passes. The Makar Sankranti bathing festival in mid-January draws crowds to the Alaknanda for ritual dips, and a large fair (Uttaraini) is held at Karanprayag on the same occasion. The Gaucher Mela, held at nearby Gaucher in November, is one of the bigger annual fairs in the Chamoli district and worth timing a visit around if you are in the region.
