Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple

A Shiva temple set in a natural cave about 3 km from town, Kapileshwar Mahadev is one of the most important religious sites in the Pithoragarh area. The approach is through a narrow gorge carved by a small stream, and the temple itself is partly set inside the rock face with a natural stone Shivalinga inside. The setting is atmospheric regardless of your interest in Hindu worship — the combination of water, forest, and ancient stone makes for a peaceful half-hour walk from the town.

The temple receives a steady stream of local pilgrims throughout the year and becomes particularly busy during Maha Shivaratri in late winter. The walk back into town through the bazaar passes several tea stalls where you can sit and watch the town go about its daily business.
