Thal Kedar

A small but strikingly located Shiva temple on the edge of the Soar Valley, Thal Kedar sits on a spur with open views down the valley and across to the surrounding ridges. The walk there from town takes about an hour through oak and rhododendron forest and is one of the better short hikes in the area, passing through quiet village settlements along the way.

The temple is not particularly large or architecturally elaborate, but the position is excellent and the path goes through some of the most pleasant terrain around Pithoragarh. Early morning is the best time to go — the light on the mountains is clear and the valley is usually quiet.
