Eating Out

Rishikesh is a Hindu holy city on the Ganges, which means it is strictly vegetarian — no meat and no alcohol are served or sold anywhere in the main tourist and pilgrimage areas. This is a feature rather than a limitation: the local food is excellent. Fresh vegetables, lentils, paneer, chai, and an abundance of South Indian cafes alongside standard North Indian options make for good and cheap eating.

The best areas for eating are the Swarg Ashram neighbourhood around Ram Jhula and the lanes around Laxman Jhula, both on the east bank. The rooftop cafes with views over the Ganges are the main draw for international visitors — serviceable pizza, Israeli-style food, and fresh juices alongside the thalis and sabzi. The quality is best in the smaller, unpretentious places.
