Parmarth Niketan Ashram

Parmarth Niketan is the largest ashram in Rishikesh, occupying a substantial campus on the east bank of the Ganges just below Ram Jhula. Founded in 1942, it now runs a comprehensive programme of yoga classes, meditation retreats, and spiritual education alongside the residential accommodation — it is one of the few ashrams in Rishikesh that genuinely balances the devotional tradition with modern international visitors.

The most accessible thing to do here is simply attend the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony at the ghat. Visitors are also welcome to attend morning yoga classes and the various meditation programmes without prior booking, though the daily schedule varies. The ashram gardens along the river are pleasant for a walk in the morning. The bookshop sells texts on Hindu philosophy and yoga.

A story
Parmarth Niketan is the largest ashram in Rishikesh but wasn't always the most famous. When the Beatles arrived in 1968, they stayed at the smaller, more secluded Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram a few kilometres away. Parmarth became internationally prominent later as a centre of yoga tourism — in 2019 it hosted India's National Yoga Day event attended by the prime minister, with the ceremony broadcast live to 190 countries.
