The Government Museum is the best counterweight to Mathura's temple circuit. Its collection is strongest in Mathura and Gandhara sculpture, with pieces from the Kushan and Gupta periods that show the city's older artistic importance.
It is a quieter visit than the shrines and a useful one. After the press of the ghats and temples, the museum gives Mathura a longer timeline than Krishna pilgrimage alone.
