Govind Dev Temple is one of Vrindavan's great older buildings, built in the late sixteenth century under the patronage of Raja Man Singh of Amber. Its heavy red sandstone mass feels closer to a fort or palace than to the white marble devotional architecture many visitors expect.
The temple is partly ruined, but that is what gives it power. Stand inside the high, vaulted space and you get a sense of Vrindavan before the modern pilgrimage town grew around it.
