Golapbag

Nineteenth-century Raj garden that now forms the leafy heart of Burdwan University.

Golapbag means "rose garden", though today it is better known as the green campus of the University of Burdwan. Raja Bijoy Chand Mahtab laid out the garden in 1883 as a retreat for the Bardhaman Raj family.

The pleasure-ground feel has not entirely gone. Old trees, water, and scattered Raj-era structures make this one of the calmest corners of the city, especially after the traffic around the station and GT Road.
