Katra Masjid

Ruined caravanserai-mosque and tomb of Murshid Quli Khan, built in the 1720s.

Katra Masjid is one of Murshidabad's most atmospheric monuments. Built in the 1720s by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, it combined a mosque, caravanserai, and the nawab's own tomb, reflecting the wealth and movement of early modern Bengal.

The 1897 earthquake damaged the complex badly, but the remaining towers, arches, and courtyard still have real force. It is a little away from the main palace cluster and is worth the extra ride, especially early or late in the day when the brickwork catches softer light.
