The Nizamat Imambara stands opposite Hazarduari Palace and is one of the largest Shia imambaras in India. The present structure was built in 1847 after an earlier wooden imambara associated with Siraj ud-Daulah was destroyed by fire.
Its long white facade gives the palace complex a ceremonial axis: palace on one side, religious hall on the other, with the old nawab city gathered around them. Access can be limited outside festival periods, but the exterior alone is a major part of Murshidabad's visual identity.
