Loloan is the old Malay Muslim quarter around the Ijogading River, split between east and west sides. Its history reaches back to Bugis, Malay, and other Muslim settlers who were allowed to live here under the Jembrana kingdom, leaving Negara with a cultural mix that feels unusual on Bali.
Come for a slow look rather than a checklist sight. You may notice wooden houses raised above the ground, mosques, Malay-inflected language, and a rhythm of daily life that has more in common with maritime Indonesia than with the temple towns inland.
