Mekepung Buffalo Races

Jembrana's harvest-season buffalo races, with decorated teams and two rival river sides.

Mekepung is Jembrana's great local spectacle: pairs of decorated buffalo pull small racing carts while jockeys lean hard into the straight dirt track. The tradition grew out of harvest-time contests between farmers and now runs as an organised racing season across several Jembrana circuits.

Do not expect a daily show. Races are seasonal, usually on selected Sunday mornings, and the location moves between circuits. If one is on while you are in west Bali, it is easily the best reason to be in Negara: loud, dusty, local, and nothing like the carefully packaged culture of the south.
