The Drop Off

A short swim from the Tulamben beachfront, the Drop Off is a sheer volcanic wall that begins at 3 metres and falls away to beyond 40. The wall is encrusted with sea fans, hard corals, and soft corals, and the blue water alongside it is patrolled by trevally, barracuda, and occasional reef sharks.

This is the more demanding counterpart to the Liberty wreck — the depths are greater and the current can run, so it suits intermediate and advanced divers better than beginners. In good visibility the wall is spectacular: you drift along it in the current while the fish traffic moves around and beneath you. It is a short surface swim from the main beach and requires no boat.
