Pura Taman Saraswati

Water temple with lotus-filled ponds dedicated to the goddess of knowledge

Pura Taman Saraswati is a Balinese Hindu temple a short walk from the palace, dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, arts, and learning — an appropriate patron for a town known for its creative life. The temple is surrounded by a large lotus pond, and the ornately carved red-brick entrance gate (candi bentar) reflected in the still water makes for one of the most photographed scenes in Ubud.

Entry to the outer courtyard is free; a small donation is expected if you enter the inner temple. The temple is active — offerings are made daily — and you should respect the dress code (sarong and sash, available to borrow at the entrance). At night the pond becomes a stage: dance performances are held here on some evenings, with the illuminated temple behind the performers.
