Moni is the small highland village below Kelimutu, used by most travellers as the base for a dawn visit to the crater lakes. It is not polished, and that is part of the appeal: guesthouses, small warungs, gardens, and views into the folded green country of central Flores.
If you have time after the summit, walk rather than rush away. The lanes around Moni pass rice terraces, church compounds, and small farms, and they give the volcano a human setting that you miss if Kelimutu is just a quick stop between Ende and Maumere.
