Tidore Great Mosque

The great mosque of Tidore stands near the centre of Soasio, a short walk from the sultan's palace. The current building is a twentieth-century replacement of an earlier wooden structure, with white walls and the distinctive multi-tiered pyramidal roof common to traditional Indonesian mosques in the eastern islands. The minaret is a more recent addition.

Tidore has been Islamic since the fifteenth century, and the sultanate's relationship with the Ottoman empire was at one point close enough that Ottoman flags and emblems made their way into the royal collection. The mosque is in active use; non-Muslim visitors are welcome to admire it from the courtyard but should not enter the prayer hall during services. Dress modestly and remove shoes if invited inside between prayer times.
