Rum Harbour

Rum is the small port on the north tip of Tidore that handles the speedboat crossings to and from Bastiong on Ternate. The trip takes about ten minutes and runs from early morning until late afternoon; boats leave when full, which means rarely more than a fifteen-minute wait at either end. For most travellers, Rum is simply the arrival point on the island — but the village itself is worth ten minutes' attention before piling into a bemo for Soasio.

The harbour has a small fish market in the mornings where the day's catch is auctioned off the boats, and a few warungs where you can wait out a downpour with a glass of sweet coffee. The road south from Rum follows the coast all the way to Soasio, passing dark-sand beaches, coconut groves, and a string of fishing villages — a half-hour ride that is one of the most pleasant short journeys in Maluku.
