Sonyine Malige Museum

The Sonyine Malige is a small museum within the Kadato Kie complex housing the personal collection of one of the recent sultans. The displays focus on royal regalia — ceremonial krises, headdresses, gold ornaments, and Qur'ans copied by hand by previous sultans — alongside diplomatic gifts received from foreign powers over the centuries. There are a few Portuguese coins, Dutch trade pieces, and Japanese officer's swords from the Second World War occupation.

The collection is modest but unusually intact, and the museum is one of the best places in eastern Indonesia to get a sense of how a Maluku sultanate actually functioned. Labels are mostly in Indonesian; the caretaker will translate the key pieces if asked. A small donation is expected.
