Abadan is in Khuzestan Province, in the extreme southwest of Iran near the Iraqi border. The nearest major city and transport hub is Ahvaz, about 130 kilometres to the north by road.
By air, Abadan Ayatollah Jami International Airport (IATA: ABD) has domestic flights to Tehran and a few other Iranian cities on Iran Air and Mahan Air, though schedules are infrequent. Flying into Ahvaz and continuing by road is often easier. Ahvaz (AWZ) has better connections.
By road, Abadan is connected to Ahvaz by a good highway. Shared taxis and occasional buses run between the two cities. The drive takes two to three hours. From Tehran, overland travel takes the better part of a day.
Foreign visitors require a valid Iranian visa. Travel near the Iraqi border requires care; check current conditions with your embassy and with Iranian travel agencies before visiting.
