The Ranguniha Mosque was built by South Asian workers — mainly Bangladeshi and Indian — who came to Abadan as labourers and technicians in the early decades of the refinery. Its architecture is distinctly subcontinental: a low, whitewashed building with a style that looks more like a South Asian mosque than an Iranian one. It stands as a quiet reminder that at its peak, Abadan was a genuinely cosmopolitan place — Indians, Britons, Iranians, and workers from across the Middle East all lived and worked here. The mosque still functions and is cared for by a small remaining South Asian community.
