Haft Tappeh

Haft Tappeh — "Seven Mounds" in Persian — is an Elamite archaeological site about 15 km from Shush, dating to roughly the 14th century BC. The site preserves the ruins of a royal tomb complex and a temple that predates Chogha Zanbil by over a century. Excavations have uncovered royal burials, cuneiform tablets, and fired-brick vaulted chambers that are among the oldest such structures known in Iran.

The on-site museum is small but well-curated. It displays some of the finest objects recovered from the tombs, including glazed pottery and bronze weapons. The site itself is less visually dramatic than Chogha Zanbil, but for anyone with a serious interest in Elamite civilization, the combination of Haft Tappeh, Shush, and Chogha Zanbil in a single day gives a remarkably complete picture of a civilization that shaped the ancient Middle East.
