Pol-e Siah (Black Bridge)

The oldest bridge in Ahvaz, Pol-e Siah takes its name from the dark colour of its original iron construction. Built in 1929 as a railway crossing, it was later adapted to carry road traffic as well. The structure sits low over the Karun River and has a functional, industrial elegance — a relic of the era when Iran was opening itself to modern infrastructure.

The bridge is most atmospheric at dusk, when the light turns the Karun to copper and families stroll the riverside promenade. It is a short walk from the city centre and makes a natural starting point for an evening walk along the waterfront.

A story
The Black Bridge was built in 1929 to carry the Trans-Iranian Railway across the Karun. In World War II it became strategically vital: Allied forces used it to supply the Soviet Union with war materiel, a route known as the Persian Corridor. Without this bridge, the outcome of Stalingrad might have been different.
