Shushtar's hydraulic system is Iran's most underrated UNESCO World Heritage site — an extraordinary feat of ancient engineering that turned a semi-arid plain into one of the most productive agricultural regions in the ancient world. The system dates back over 2,000 years, though most of what survives is Sassanid-era construction, and includes a network of tunnels, canals, dams, and watermills still partially functioning today.
The most spectacular part is the waterfall at Band-e Kaisar, where water from the upper canal system cascades down a cliff face into the city's lower garden district. Standing above the falls and looking down at the multi-layered hydraulic works below gives a visceral sense of the engineering ambition involved. The site is compact enough to walk in two hours. Shushtar is about 90 km from Ahvaz and makes an easy half-day excursion.
